Artist's Statement

My interest in textiles originates from an early age and from my family with parents and grandparents all participating in a craft.  My grandmother made many rugs during the war years.   I have spent the last 45 years [I was introduced to making my own dolls clothes at 4yrs old] ‘crafting‘ and ‘making’ and have utilised my skills gained in garden designing to explore the different textures, colours and opportunities that blending the different mediums together can give a finished item.   I also enjoy making items from what is seen as ‘waste’ and using duvets and bedding provides an endless source of inexpensive resources obtained from charity shops, jumble sales and many folk provide me with their old textiles.
My inspiration for many of my designs comes from the landscape and skies in Devon but I enjoy contrasting textures and colours which my medium offers endless possibilities.  I enjoy combining the different techniques them to make highly textured items including knitting fabric, into rugs, wall hangings and waistcoats. My designs are contemporary in nature and I am exploring the possibilities of applying these techniques for clothing, three dimensional work and upholstery and incorporating gold work embroidery.  I am member of Textile Forum South West [TFSW]
