Stella Levy

Stella has built a reputation in North Devon for her community projects using tapestry and photography, but also for coming up with seemingly ‘mad’ ideas to engage people with art. She has strong promotional skills, which are put to good use when organising projects.

Artist's Statement

Public Tapestry Commissions Concept, Design, Stitching & Teaching
Include; ‘The Ilfracombe Community Tapestry’ commissioned for The Landmark Theatre and a tapestry to mark 400 years’ celebration of the South Molton Charter.
Documentary Photographic Work
Include; ‘A Year in the Life of the South Molton Sheep Fair Field’ 1997 - Ongoing
An idea enlarged with writer colleague Mary Stephenson, creating a photographic, written and sound documentation of events, people and animals associated with this field. This body of work is now seen as an important contemporary archive for the town and is exhibited periodically in the area.

Include; NDA ‘Arts Trail’ 2001. Part of North Devon Festival. Co-ordination, Design & Promotion. North Devon’s first Open Studios event, featured twelve top artists.
NDA ‘Arts Trail’ 2002. Part of North Devon Festival. Co-ordination, Design & Promotion
A poet and four artists were commissioned to work with four North Devon communities. Temporary outdoor sculptures and poetry were created to encourage visits to the countryside after foot and mouth crisis.
'Sheep in the Shops’ 2002 & 2003. Concept, Co-ordination & Promotion
Five artists’ commissioned to work in schools and the community, producing ‘sheep’ for South Molton shop windows, to promote/create awareness of the market town’s history.
‘Walk in the Woods’ 2006. Part of North Devon Festival. Project Co-ordination
Fund-raising and promotion of an idea conceived by NDA artist, Emily Garnham Wright, to create a large, textile sculpture in a North Devon woodland.
‘Art Bazaar’ Annual Event. Concept, Co-ordination, Design & Promotion
Promoting professional artists to the public.
Art Trek 2006, 2007 & 2008 (2008 - This year's Art Trek event will be taking place Thursday, 19th June through to Sunday, 22nd of June, from 11am to 4.15pm). Part of North Devon Festival. Co-ordination & Promotion
A friendly Open Studios event, where artists across the area open their homes, studios and assorted venues, inviting the public in to discuss art over a cup of tea!
