Stella has built a strong reputation in Devon for her organisational and promotional skills, managing Art events such as, Art Trek Open Studios and Art Bazaar.  She enjoys conjuring up seemingly mad ideas to engage people with the Arts and the artists involved

Artist's Statement

Projects & Events:

‘The Mariners Way Walk Project’ 2011 Idea, Co-ordination & Curation
Working with colleague Julie Gavin and NDA artist Ed Crumpton, it is proposed to highlight this ancient seamen’s’ route from Bideford to Dartmouth by creating artwork responding to the walk.  Idea is being formulated, talking with relevant organisations across Devon, with a view to start the walk in July at the Bideford 500 Heritage Day celebrations.  Latest details; www.edcrumpton.com

Ilfracombe Regeneration Project 2008 
Arts audit in the area, reporting to North Devon District Council.

Art Trek 2006 - 2011 Co-ordination & Promotion
Friendly Open Studios annual event, where over 100 artists across the area open their homes, studios and assorted venues to invite the public in to see their work and chat over a cup of tea!  The Castle Hill Art Fair is a new event included in Art Trek this year. Art Trek is a Major North Devon Festival event

Art Bazaar 2002 – 2011 Concept, Co-ordination, Design & Promotion
A successful annual selling event, promoting professional artists to the public.

‘Walk in the Woods’ 2006 Co-ordination, Fund-raising & Promotion      
Idea by NDA artist, Emily Garnham Wright.  Walk-in textile sculpture created in North Devon woodland. North Devon Arts project as part of North Devon Festival.

'Sheep in the Shops’ 2002 & 2003 Idea, Concept, Co-ordination & Promotion
Five artists were commissioned to work in schools and community, producing ‘sheep’ for South Molton shop windows. A fun project. Created for South Molton Olde English Fayre and North Devon Festival.

NDA ‘Arts Trail’ 2001 Co-ordination, Design & Promotion.
The first North Devon Open Studios. 12 artists’ opened their homes and studios to the public. Part of North Devon Festival.

NDA ‘Arts Trail’ 2002 Co-ordination, Design & Promotion
Poet and four artists commissioned to work within four North Devon communities. Temporary outdoor sculptures and poem created, to encourage visits to the countryside after foot and mouth crisis. Part of North Devon Festival.

Tapestry Commissions: Concept, Design, Stitching & Teaching

‘The Ilfracombe Community Tapestry’ A two year project commissioned by North Devon District Council and Ilfracombe Town Council as a community sewn piece for The Landmark Theatre, where is it sited in the foyer.

‘The South Molton Community Tapestry’ A two year community project to mark 400 years’ of the town’s Royal Charter. Sited in The Assembly Rooms.

Church Kneelers Swimbridge, Chittlehampton, Braunton and Atherington.

‘A Year in the Life of the South Molton Sheep Fair Field’ 1997 - Ongoing
An original idea, developed over a two year period with writer colleague Mary Stephenson. A photographic, written, illustrated and sound documentation of events, people, animals and machinery associated with this field.  The body of work is viewed as an important contemporary archive of a lost way of life in South Molton.  The work is exhibited periodically in South Molton and the North Devon & Barnstaple Museum displayed some of the sheep field photos alongside James Ravilious’ work in 2010.
