Stella Levy

Stella has built a reputation in North Devon for her community projects using tapestry and photography, but also for coming up with seemingly ‘mad’ ideas to engage people with art.  She has strong promotional skills, which are put to good use when organising projects.

Artist's Statement

Ilfracombe Regeneration Project
2008.  Arts audit in the area, reporting to NDC
Art Trek 2006 - 2009 Co-ordination & Promotion
The friendly Open Studios event, where artists across the area open their homes, studios and assorted venues to invite the public in to talk over a cup of tea!  Part of North Devon Festival
‘Art Bazaar’ Annual Event. Concept, Co-ordination, Design & Promotion
A selling event, to promote professional artists to the public.
NDA ‘Arts Trail’ 2001.  Co-ordination, Design & Promotion. The first North Devon Open Studios. Part of North Devon Festival.
‘Walk in the Woods’ 2006. Project Co-ordination Fund-raising and promotion of an idea conceived by NDA artist, Emily Garnham Wright, to create a large, walk-in textile sculpture in a North Devon woodland. Part of North Devon Festival.
NDA ‘Arts Trail’ 2002. Co-ordination, Design & Promotion
A poet and four artists commissioned to work within four North Devon communities. Temporary outdoor sculptures and poem created, to encourage visits to the countryside after foot and mouth. Part of North Devon Festival.
'Sheep in the Shops’ 2002 & 2003. Concept, Co-ordination & Promotion
Five artists commissioned to work in schools and the community, producing ‘sheep’ for South Molton shop windows. A fun project to promote and create awareness of the market town’s history. Part of South Molton Olde English Fayre.

Public Tapestry Commissions: Concept, Design, Stitching & Teaching
‘The Ilfracombe Community Tapestry’ commissioned by North Devon District Council for The Landmark Theatre.
‘The South Molton Community Tapestry’ to mark 400 years’ of the town’s Charter. Installed in the South Molton Assembly Rooms.
Church Kneeler projects across the area.

‘A Year in the Life of the South Molton Sheep Fair Field’
- 1997 - Ongoing
An idea enlarged with writer colleague Mary Stephenson. A photographic, written and sound documentation of events, people and animals associated with this field; now viewed as an important contemporary archive for the town.

Membership and Directorships
Chair, North Devon Arts.
Director, North Devon Theatres Trust and is chair of its Policy sub-group.  The board have responsibility for two North Devon Theatres, North Devon Festival, Barnstaple & North Devon Museum projects and help form Arts Policies for North Devon.
Devon Artsculture member.
