I have a Fine Art Degree from Plymouth University, - during which I discovered printmaking. I like the reduction to essentials that printmaking involves and the impossibility of completely controlling the process! I mainly cut lino, but sometimes use wood, and also make monoprints, drypoints and collages of printed paper.
Linocuts are relief prints. Material is cut away from the block to create the design. It is then inked with a roller, paper is placed on top and pressure applied. Each print is hand-pulled and I usually make small editions of about 20. These prints exist in no other form and shouldn't be confused with reproductions of paintings etc., which are often called prints.
Subject matter comes from the North Devon landscape and the activities that go on here, it is my attempt to reflect my deep attachment to the area. There is nearly always a story within the image, or a starting point for one, which I hope engages the viewer.
I am a Member of Appledore Crafts Company. This is a co-operatively run Gallery near Bideford which was started 18 years ago. Work can also be seen in the Burton Art Gallery and the Waterside Gallery, Instow. I exhibit several times a year in group exhibitions and run relief printmaking workshops from time to time.
