Artist's Statement

A series of personal icons formed the basis for my recent exhibition at the Burton Gallery, Bideford. Imagery reflecting various aspects of my existence, interests in art, music and literature became distilled into personal signposts that were used as responses to events and experiences.  My job as programme leader for the new North Devon School of Art means that I am constantly researching artists, genres and concepts. This contributes to my paintings being perhaps varied in style but more importantly giving me a reflective and self critical framework within which to work. I am also affected by time constraints which I see as positive, whereas some paintings evolve over  months, many paintings are mostly created in one or two sessions-usually involving working into the early hours.
The mix of working methods is reflected in my application of paint, brush marks and forms, often reflecting the ideas that I am researching at the time of making the work.
Kerouac’s Road for example, was painted after listening to a radio programme about the re-release of Jack Kerouac’s ‘On The Road’, which was written in a ‘caffeine fuelled frenzy on a continuous piece of paper’. There is also a bit of Ry Cooder’s pink guitar, as a homage to his Paris Texas theme.
Goals and Weeping Guitar explore the iconic electric guitar both as instrument and tool for social change. Witness Billy Braggs taking second electric guitars into prisons to aid rehabilitation. Homage explores personal skill in attempting to deal with space, precision and form in the manner of De Chirico.
My painting is an essential component of my existence, responding to circumstances and reflecting interests and aspirations.
