I have lived in Devon all my life. Always interested in the arts especially Still Life Paintings. But due to running my own business for over thirty years was unable to find the time to pursue the pastime that I would have wished for.
Six years ago i bought my first camera and took numerous seminars to enable me to use it with confidence. I use this to carry out the work that i now enjoy.
WORKING METHOD
I tend to visit Charity and Antique Fairs until I see something that gives me an idea for a still life picture. This could be a vase, glass or some other item. After purchase it is taken to my small studio and placed where i can view it whenever i enter the room. Over the next few days other items are added and gradually the picture that i want starts to appear. I find composition the most difficult but i study the past masters such as Chardin, Willem Kalf etc. for inspiration and try to learn from them. Hopefully sometimes I get it right!
Then I take the shot using large soft boxes etc. which will give me very soft shadows if any and that brings me to the part that i enjoy the most. Using Digital Brushes I add highlights and shadows to add depth also I might paint the background or other areas to get the picture as I want it. This can be time consuming but very rewarding.
