Dusk’s Peaceful Tension by Michelle Cartlidge

We would like to congratulate NDA Member Michelle Cartlidge on having one of her artworks accepted for the Bath Open Art Prize 2022.

The Bath Open Art Prize exhibition, organised by Fringe Arts Bath is an amazing eclectic selection of artworks, presenting 67 visual artists working across all disciplines in a varied range of media including video, installation, woodblock print, oil paint, collage and more. It is one of the key open art prizes in the South West

Michelle’s work was chosen from over 500 entries to be one of 67 pieces entered into the exhibition.

The first and second prizes have already been awarded but there is a chance Michelle’s entry could win the People’s Choice voted for by visitors to the exhibition.

Michelle from Braunton, was delighted to be selected has told us a little about her artwork:

‘Dusk’s Peaceful Tension’
Mixed media artwork on cradled panel
20” x 30”

In my work I am contemplating the natural world in all its raw beauty and wonder, inspired by the coast here in North Devon, in particular Down End rocks and Braunton marshes/ Velator. I am interested how nature is reflected in the human condition in all its myriad forms, how we learn and evolve, and especially when there are hidden disabilities. There is decay and rebirth, depth, and many layers that are sometimes revealed and sometimes remain hidden. There is importance in the minute detail and often we cannot understand without looking deeper.

‘Pray, don’t find fault with the man that limps,
Or stumbles along the road.
Unless you have worn the moccasins he wears,
Or stumbled beneath the same load.’ (From the poem ‘Judge Softly’ by Mary T. Lathrap, 1895)

The exhibition runs until the end of October. You can find out more information by going to:
